Join Louisa County Conservation for one of our Monarch Mania events and be a part of Monarch butterfly research during the peak of the Monarch butterfly migration! Drop by anytime between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM to learn about the incredible journey these special butterflies embark on each year. Witness one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in the world. Experience interactive games and crafts. We will also search for, catch, tag and release Monarchs.
Monarch butterflies cannot survive our cold Iowa winters, instead they travel up to 3000 miles south to forests high in the mountains of Mexico. Monarchs will stop to nectar along the way which is to our advantage. We can assist with monarch research by catching the butterflies, placing a small tag on their wing, recording their information and releasing them to continue their long journey south. These tags help researchers learn about the migration of the Monarch.
