There are many great paddling opportunities in Louisa County. A person could choose to float the Iowa or Cedar Rivers for a scenic and peaceful trip or the Mississippi River which takes a little more skill and knowledge. The Odessa Wildlife Management Area is a great place for flatwater trips where a person could paddle for several hours through channels, chutes and sloughs or for just a handful of minutes in the open water. Indian Slough is a low, marshy area that can offer great bird viewing, hunting and fishing opportunities.
The best advice we can offer is to take a map and/or GPS and to know the water levels prior to going out. Annually levels can range from extreme flooding to extreme drought in all of our areas. Conditions can be dangerous when rivers go outside of their banks.
