Big Sand Mound Field Day 2018

The Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve is an important ecosystem in the Midwest, known for its sand prairie, shallow ponds and woodlands. The Big Sand Mound Field Day is a chance for the public to visit and explore one of Iowa's premier natural areas and learn from specialists in the natural resources and ecology field.  Many of the sessions are hikes  that can include walking over sand or forested areas with gently rolling terrain.  View the brochure to see what all is being offered and to plan your day.

  • You should know: Bring a sack lunch and drink.  Dress for the weather, event will be held rain or shine.  Closed toe, sturdy walking shoes and long pants are needed for walking through the sand prairie.  Plan for sunshine including: sunscreen, a hat and/or sunglasses.  Participants are welcome to bring field guides, cameras and Binoculars.
