Monarch Mania

Sunday, September 17; 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Join us at Langwood Education Center and catch a Monarch before they head down to Mexico! Monarch butterflies cannot survive our cold Iowa winters so instead they travel down to the forests which are high in the mountains of Mexico. Monarchs make the long trip, up to three thousand miles, in this

two way migration every year. They often fly to the exact same tree that their genetic line has been traveling to. Monarchs will stop to feed along the way which is to our advantage. We will be helping with monarch research by catching the butterflies while they are on nectaring plants. We will then place a small tag on their wings, record information, and release them to continue on

their journey. These tags help researchers to learn about the migration of the monarch.
Nets and tags will be provided but please wear long pants and tennis shoes.

Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 14. To register please call the office at 319-523-8381 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
