Archery in the Schools

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) was created in 2002 by educators, conservation agencies, and private organizations. Educators were looking for ways to improve student motivation, attention, behavior, attendance, and focus while conservation agencies were concerned too many young people are forgoing learning outdoor skills that will inspire them to spend more time with wild things in wild places. Natural resource professionals are convinced learning target shooting skills will result in character and self-reliance development that will serve the future of wildlife conservation as well. Since its inception, more than 4 million students in over 5,000 schools located in 49 states and 5 countries have participated in the program.

Louisa County Conservation has a set of Archery Equipment that is available for rent to those who are Basic Archery Instructors. In December of 2014, Louisa County Conservation helped to get the Physical Education Teachers trained as Basic Archery Instructors which allows them to rent the equipment for their school and teach their students a two week course on Archery. Columbus Junction, Morning Sun, Winfield-Mt. Union, and Louisa-Muscatine all have trained staff who offer archery to their students.

All those who are interested in renting the Archery Equipment must be certified as a Basic Archery Instructor through the National Archery in the Schools Program. They must also complete and send in the Archery Agreement.
